Commvault Features Clumio Backtrack at AWS re:Invent 2024

by Shawn Cannon

Commvault recently announced a new addition to their impressive lineup of products, Clumio Backtrack. What exactly is Clumio Backtrack? Consider this:

  • 73% of data throughout the world is stored in the cloud (Source: BCG)
  • Spend on public cloud services is on track to increase 2x by 2028 compares to 2024 (Source: IDC)

As far as cloud services goes, AWS is one of the most widely used clouds, with Amazon S3 storing 350 trillion objects and exabytes of data (Source: AWS). One of the native features of AWS S3 is Versioning. Versioning is a very important feature that allows you to have multiple versions of the files/objects stored in S3. This features is a security best practice to have this enabled.

With versioning enabled, recovery of the proper version of files can be challenging, especially in large S3 buckets. There could be billions of objects to correlate. It is also a manual process to determine which versions are correct at the time point you need it. This process would take days and delay the recovery process.

Enter Clumio Backtrack

This is why Clumio Backtrack was developed, to help you manage the recovery of S3 objects. Some key information:

  • Clumio Backtrack is 100% SaaS-based
  • Recover to a specific point-in-time
  • Restore by object name prefix or size for greater granularity
  • Easily turn of for existing buckets with S3 Versioning enabled

Essentially, Clumio Backtrack is S3 Recovery at Scale

  • Automate the recovery process for billions of objects
  • Saves significate time and effort from days/weeks to minutes/hours
  • Reduces cost burden by leveraging existing S3 versoning

Shawn’s Thoughts on Clumio Backtrack

As a user of AWS and S3, I know the importance of versioning for files/objects. I have had to recover some older file versions before but luckily it was in a small S3 bucket and it was easy to find the version I wanted. If I had to maintain S3 buckets with millions of files and version recovery was needed, I would be facing a long time combing through everything. This is where Clumio Backtrack would be the perfect solution. Being able to look for the objects that I want to roll back to with granularity such as object name prefix and object size and do that at scale is a game changer. I can see Clumio Backtrack being especially useful for rolling back due to ransomware attacks, helping me find a usable point in time faster than manually doing it.
