HPE’s little server that could, the MicroServer, has a new revision the Gen10 Plus. The new revision includes Intel processors compared to the Gen10 that featured AMD processors. The new models are half the height of the Gen8 and Gen10 models.
HPE is clearly targeting moderately small workloads in branch locations. The new Gen10 Plus limits RAM to 32GB (a disappointing limit for home lab uses) and features both Pentium and Xeon E processors in the servers.
Most of all, the Gen10 Plus adds back iLO capabilities that were missing in the Gen10 launch. That was the primary gripe I had in the Gen10 release. For a small server targeted at branch uses, the lack of out of band management is a deal breaker – or a least a major inconvenience for administrators. It was an odd decision to remove this, as the Gen8 included iLO.
With the size and price of the MicroServer Gen10 Plus, it is a handy model for branch caching and other local services in a branch. With security concerns over the last couple years with SuperMicro, I have seen a number of software vendors choosing HPE as their appliance partner of choice – including some use cases with the MicroServer Gen10 and Gen10 Plus as their entry model.
The Gen10 Plus unit features 4 large-form-factor drive bays, just like the Gen10. With an entry price of just above $500, the price is right for many small uses.
