You ever ask the question “Wow, I wish there were a consolidated place to find everything* there is to find about NetApp and Virtualization?”
I ask that question all the time. The following is a release of my internal notes I’d forward to people when they say “NetApp + Citrix?” “NetApp + VMware” or “NetApp + Hyper-V”
This way, both you AND I have a single place to go look and I don’t have to reinvent my wheel!
Everything you wanted to know about NetApp and Virtualization but were afraid to ask.
NetApp Virtualization Team Blog – Great resource of information and the definitive source on updates of new documents, TR’s, etc – It is where I’ll update new links like those above from.
VMware and NetApp
Microsoft and NetApp
Citrix and NetApp
Oracle and NetApp
And some definite –must- reads!
NetApp 50% Virtualization Guarantee* (Effective until December 31, 2009)
Top Must Read Knowledge Base Articles (Virt-KB!)
NetApp Virtualization and Twitter!
Yes! I was able to track down the folks at NetApp who are on Twitter, so follow them here!
NetApp Virtualization and YouTube!
“
Since we have been looking at NetApp, these caught my eye. I hope someone else will find them useful. Make sure to check out http://www.pkguild.com if you haven’t before.

http://www.virtualpro.co.uk/ did a nice write up on how to search for a public folder in exchange 2003. I thought I would link for those of you that use exchange.
“
Today I needed to extract a list of all our mail enabled public folders as part of an audit. It took a little while but I finally worked it out, so I thought I would share it as I failed to find much on the internet that helped.
Follow the steps below to find and extract the information on all your mail enabled public folders
Open Active Directory users and computers and right click on saved queries and select new query
Name the query and add a description and choose the query root, usually the top level domain and the click the define query button.
Select exchange recipients from the drop down menu and uncheck the boxes as required, in this case I only checked the mail enabled public folders.
Click OK and then click OK again to run the query, when the results are returned, click, view and then add remove columns. Add the email address column.
To export the list to a tab delimited text file, right click the saved query and select export list, save the file and that’s it.
Hope that helps someone out, bugged me for a good 40 minutes earlier today.
”
I thought this as very useful, so I added it to my useless collection of helpful blogs.

iSCSI and Jumbo Frames configuration on ESX 3.5
“
KB Article
1007654
Products
VMware ESX
Product Versions
VMware ESX 3.5.x
Symptoms
Large queues are seen while monitoring Jumbo Frames
Purpose
This article provides information related to setting up an NAS and iSCSI environment with Jumbo Frames.
Caution: This is not a VMware supported configuration.
Resolution
The following is important information to know when using Jumbo Frames:
Any packet larger than 1500 MTU is a Jumbo Frame. ESX 3.5 supports frames up to 9kB (9000 Bytes). They are limited to data networking only (virtual machines and the VMotion network) on ESX 3i/3.5.
Jumbo Frames must be enabled for each vSwitch or VMkernel interface through the command‐line interface on your ESX Server 3 host.
To allow ESX Server 3 to send larger frames out onto the physical network, the network must support Jumbo Frames end to end for Jumbo Frames to be effective.
Before enabling jumbo frames, ensure the NIC or LOM supports jumbo frames.
VMware supports jumbo frames with the following vendors:
Intel (82546, 82571),
Broadcom (5708, 5706, 5709),
Netxen (NXB-10GXxR,
NXB-10GCX4),
Neterion (Xframe, Xframe II, Xframe E).
Run the esxcfg-vswitch -m <MTU> <vSwitch> command to set the MTU size for the vSwitch.
This command sets the MTU for all uplinks on that vSwitch. Set the MTU size to the largest MTU size among all the virtual network adapters connected to the vSwitch.
Run the esxcfg-vswitch -l command to display a list of vSwitches on the host, and check that the configuration of the vSwitch is correct.
To create a Jumbo Frames-enabled VMkernel interface:
Log in directly to your ESX Server 3 host’s console.
Run the esxcfg-vmknic -a -i <ip address> -n <netmask> -m <MTU> <portgroup name> command to create a VMkernel connection with Jumbo Frame
support.
Run the esxcfg-vmknic -l command to display a list of VMkernel interfaces, and check that the configuration of the Jumbo Frame‐enabled interface is correct.
Note: ESX Server 3 supports a maximum MTU size of 9000.

As a followup to my previous posts about thin clients and our research, we made a first step into the virtual desktop arena. We purchased 55 Pano Logic units just before end of last year. They arrived and have been safely stored away while we work out the rest of our implementation plans. This is just our first step at HTC and we see the potential of choosing one or maybe two more solutions which meet our needs in other areas. We are unsure how the Pano units will work in our business offices. Our initial roll out will be in our central offices and we may expand upon that.
We still need to complete the backend infrastructure to handle our roll out. We are making decisions now whether to locate our initial virtual desktop pools with our other virtual servers in the same cluster, or whether to deploy a new cluster. We also have to look at DHCP for our entire network, as our current solution does not appear to be able to hand out the additional directives to the Pano devices. I hope to be able to do a more detailed entry about the whole process once we get further down the road.

John Troyer at the http://blogs.vmware.com/vmtn announced a new vExpert Award.
“
VMware is very proud to introduce the VMware vExpert Awards. The VMware vExpert Awards will be given to individuals who have significantly contributed to the overall community of VMware users over the past year, either online or offline. You might be contributing online to blogs, forums, wikis, or other online sites. You might be organizing VMUG meetings or otherwise getting the word out to local IT professionals. You’re helping spread the word about virtualization and making people successful in deploying this game-changing technology. We want to thank you.
Here is the nomination form. You can nominate yourself or someone else. We’re also taking nominations from people and programs within VMware, so you actually don’t even have to nominate yourself and you still could wake up one day with an award. You might want to fill out the form anyway, because we may not be aware of everything you’re doing.
“
I think this is very interesting, as it shows a company, ( VMware ) and major one at that, reaching out to the communities. Not only that, but rewarding those that take the time and choose to share the knowledge they have shared.
Admittedly, I do not have the time needed to do a Virutalization blog full justice, with a son under two, but I started blogging about the technology blogs I was reading, to musty pin all the information in one place. In doing so, I have gotten into a fantastic group of technology fanatics, and have learned more in the last few months than I thought possible. I want to congratulate the VMware vExperts that qualify and receive the award, now before the results. Why? Because anyone who puts in the time, and cares enough to share his or her knowledge on the subject, is more than qualified to win the nomination.
Lastly, I wanted to thank John and the VMware team for taking the time and resources they do to work with the communities, and end users.

Engadet has a great article about what Apple could learn from the Palm webOS. Engadget pretty much hits the nail on the head. For all iPhone users, reading this or even watching the Palm presentation from CES should make you realize that the iPhone isn’t complete. There is still some growing and changing left to be accomplished for the product and that’s a great thing. Check out the article at Engadget’s website.
Did Engadget miss anything? Really, only one thing that I can think of. It is a combination of the synergy contacts and IM points. The feature that I really loved about the webOS was the ability to change contexts of conversations between text and chat and keep the entire conversation thread going in a central location. Its a feature Google has recently integrated into their Google chat application. You are able to switch between chatting and texting a contact in the same window. That’s a very cool, and doable feature for the iPhone. Plus, I’d love to be able to have my iChat on the iPhone, with Google Talk and AIM support…
The VMTN Blog has a blog entry titled Exchange on VMware Infrastructure: podcast, webinar, white papers
Since we will be implementing a exchange solution under VMware in the future, this caught my eye.
“
A common question that comes up with our customers is, "Can I put Microsoft Exchange 2007 on VMware Infrastructure?" And the answer is "You betcha!"
We eat our own dogfood here at VMware.* See this new-ish white paper: Deploying Exchange Server 2007 on VMware Infrastructure: A VMware Internal Case Study
Join us this Wednesday, Jan 14, for another round of the VMware Communities Roundtable podcast, where a panel of experienced VMware admins come together for a weekly session — usually informative, sometimes funny, occasionally abrasive, never scripted. We have an increasing number of live listeners and chatters from all around the world. If Rod can set the alarm to get up from Australia, and Tom can call in from his hotel room in the UK, you have no excuse for not taking a break from work, so just drop by and say hi.
What: VCR #31. Virtualizing Exchange, Domino, and RIM
When: Wednesday, noon PST, 3pm EST, 8pm GMT, and Thursday 7am in Sydney.
How: VMware Communities Roundtable on Talkshoe.
And if that piques your interest for more, join VMware experts on this webinar the next day, Jan 15: Exchange 2007 on VMware: Technical Case Study. This should be a good one. The webinar does require registration, but I can’t imagine you’re not already getting our email, and you can always opt out.
And finally, here’s a page of case studies and technical resources about VMware as the best platform for Microsoft Exchange. And yes, Microsoft Exchange 2007 on VMware is a supported configuration.
”
I hope to be able to attend this up coming, VMware Communities Roundtable.
But remember, they are also recorded, so if you miss it make sure to check it out at a later date, I even have a player on my Blog.
Thanks to VMware for the content.
